As part of a comprehensive modernisation programme, public restrooms at several SBB railway stations across Switzerland underwent a complete redesign. Inspired by the restorative atmosphere of a spa, DOST Architects reimagined these spaces through a fresh interior concept, introducing warmth and tranquillity within an environment defined by constant movement. While an initial lighting concept was already in place, its design approach, specification and long-term value required careful reassessment.

studio ombré were engaged to undertake a detailed, independent peer review and ensure that the lighting supported the intended atmosphere. Drawing on our experience in high-end hospitality, we reconsidered the integration of luminaires, quality of light, controls and future maintenance. The focus was on visual comfort and accessibility, creating an inclusive setting that accommodates diverse needs while offering travellers a brief moment of pause during their journey.

Working closely with SBB and DOST Architects, we established a coherent lighting language, a reduced and standardised luminaire palette, and a pragmatic, intuitive control system. The refined concept balances atmosphere with long-term practicality and provides a consistent framework for implementation across multiple railway stations in Switzerland.
